Foundations - Discipleship

-What do you think discipleship is?

-What do you think mentorship is?

Discipleship vs Mentorship (Read to your group to set the context for the night)

"There’s clearly a lot of similarity between mentoring and disciplemaking. Both a mentor and a disciplemaker seek to help another grow, both function within the framework of a relationship, and both desire to see the other person succeed at something. In both cases the influencer is typically older and more experienced than the one they are influencing.

The difference between the two lies at their root. Mentoring is focused on helping a person develop in a specific area. Discipleship is focused on developing someone wholly. Mentoring looks to help 1 specific person; Discipleship looks to create a pattern of multiplication.

Discipleship is also generational. Someone disciples you, you disciple someone, they disciple someone else that will go onto disciple others.

-Has anyone ever discipled you? If so, who? What did that relationship look like? What did they pass on to you?

Read Luke 9:23-27

-in Vs 23, What 2 requirements does Jesus command in order to follow Him? How costly are these requirements? Are they realistic in 2025?

-Read Vs 24-27 again. How seriously does Jesus take following and obeying Him over following and obeying the world? Where does one find life and where does one find death?

Discipleship Survey (These questions are to be read out loud, but answered privately. If anyone feels comfortable, they are welcomed to share..but it may be humbling.) These questions are not intended to bring about shame, but to open our eyes to our fulfilling of the Great Commission.

1. Who have you discipled over the last 12 months? Using the biblical concept of reproducing yourself in the life of someone else, list those who you have reproduced yourself in?

2. Who have you discipled over the last 5 years that is currently making disciples? Using the biblical concept of reproducing yourself in the life of someone else, list those who you have reproduced yourself in?

3. Could you give a list of actual names of people that are currently reproducing themselves in others, making disciples, that would identify you as their primary discipler/influencer?

4. Is your current vision for Disciple-making based on “ideas” or proven “fruitfulness”?

Action:
End your time together as a group praying. Ask God the following:
-To reveal someone that could disciple you
-To reveal someone you could begin to disciple
-To ask God to increase your love for HIM and HIS people
